According to the Social Investment Forum's 2007 Report on Socially Responsible Investing Trends in the United States, socially-responsible investing is a global phenomenon, reaching capital markets around the world.

They state that since 2005, the primary catalysts have included everything from "the conflict in the Sudan to concerns over global warming and climate change, from the United Nation's Principles of Responsible Investment to the awarding of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize to Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank for his work in microfinance".
